Pixel Art Maker and Image to Pixel Art Converter

Draw pixel art on an 8×8 to 64×64 grid, or turn any photo into pixel art with retro palettes. Export PNG or SVG.

Turn an image into pixel art

The image is cropped to a square and shrunk to 16 × 16 pixels. Pick the canvas size first.

PNG, JPG, GIF, or WebP — it stays on your device

What is this tool?

Draw sprites, icons, and avatars pixel by pixel with pencil, eraser, fill, and color picker, plus mirror modes for symmetrical designs. Or upload a photo to turn it into pixel art, reducing it to a few colors or a classic palette such as PICO-8, Game Boy, or NES.

Image conversion crops the photo to a centered square, averages each block of pixels, and then reduces the colors with k-means clustering or maps them to a fixed palette. Fewer colors and smaller grids give a more classic retro look.

PNG exports are scaled with hard edges so pixels stay sharp, and SVG exports stay crisp at any size. Your images are processed locally in the browser.

How to use the Pixel Art Maker

  1. Choose a canvas size from 8×8 to 64×64 pixels.
  2. Draw with the pencil, fill areas, erase, or pick colors from your art. Turn on mirroring for symmetrical sprites.
  3. To convert a photo, choose how many colors or which palette to use, then upload the image.
  4. Use undo, redo, and flip as needed, then download a scaled-up PNG or a crisp SVG.

A 32 × 32 drawing exported at 16× becomes a 512 × 512 px PNG with perfectly square pixels.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn a picture into pixel art?

Pick a canvas size (32×32 is a good start), choose the number of colors or a palette, and upload the image under “Turn an image into pixel art”. You can then touch it up with the drawing tools.

Will my art be saved?

The canvas lives in this page only. Download a PNG or SVG to keep your work — nothing is uploaded or stored.

Can I make a favicon from my pixel art?

Yes. Download the PNG, then open the Favicon Generator, choose Image, and upload it to get favicon.ico and all the other icon sizes.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. Draw with your finger or a stylus; the canvas doesn't scroll while you paint.
